TERRY NASONGA
Meet Terry Nasonga, an 11 years old girl living in Kawangware informal settlement with her single mother together with her siblings. They have resided in this said slums for more than 10 years now and they consider it as their residential site. Their household consist of 5 members in total this includes her mother and them. Terry’s father abandoned them long time ago when she was still a little child leaving behind her mother to carry all the burden and responsibilities of taking care of them. Before leaving her father was also a victim of substance abuse, most of the time he was causing domestic violence at home when he is drunk.
Terry is currently not going to school, the reason being is that her mother cannot afford to cater for her school fees. She was previously going to school and was supposed to be in grade 6 but the financial challenges at home hindered her from going. Her school fees kept on accumulating at school forcing the school administration to send her home never to return. Terry and her family are living in a small house in the middle of the slums, a house that has been build out of mud. She sometimes feels lonely and ashamed when she remains at home while seeing other kids going to school. At the same time, her mother is unemployed only relying on odd jobs like cleaning other people’s clothes in order for her to raise little amount for paying house rent. Her job is not guaranteed meaning that sometimes she might go to work and come home without earning any amount. Sometimes Terry and her siblings are subjected to hunger when her mother doesn’t have any money to buy food. They sometimes borrow from their neighbors or have one meal per day. Terry also doesn’t have good clothes to wear, she only relies on those which are old and torn. Her mother feels like Terry’s future might be ruined if they don’t get immediate support.
