MARY AKOTH
Meet Mary Akoth, a 13 years old girl living in Kawangware informal settlement together with her single mother and her siblings. They have lived in Kawangware slums for more than 5 years now. Their household consist of 5 members in total this includes her siblings together with her mother. Mary’s father abandoned her family long time ago leaving behind her mother as the breadwinner of this family. Currently Mary is not going to school simply because her mother cannot afford to pay her school fees. She has been away from school since last year when she was in grade7. The school administration sends her back home never to return before paying the remaining balance simply because she had a huge balance at school. Her mother is currently relying on her security job for survival, a job that doesn’t give her enough money to cater for her family’s welfare. At home, they sometimes lack money to buy food leaving them with nothing to eat. This sometimes force them either to borrow from their neighbors or to sleep hungry if there is no other option. Mary’s family are living in fear knowing that soon they will be kicked out of their house if they consistently omit to pay house rent. Despite all this they are Christian and they believe that one day things will be normalized and Mary will go back to school. Most of the times Mary’s friends have ignored her simply because she wears old clothes. Mary is an ambitious girl who is looking on her future and hope that it will be better soon. She wants to become a nurse when she grows up.
