DECQUINE OCHIENG

Meet Decquine Ochieng, a 13 years old boy residing in Kawangware informal settlement with his parents together with his siblings. They have stayed in Kawangware since the time Decquine was a child up to now. They are a total of 5 people in their household this includes his parents, him and his siblings. His parents are doing an odd and minor job which cannot sustain the family for long period of time. His mother is unemployed and only relies on cleaning other people’s clothes for survival whrereas his father only does mechanical job a job that does not earn him enough money. Currently, Decquine is not going to school simply because him parents cannot afford to pay his school fees. He was sent home simply because he had a huge school fees balance. His parents feel like Decquine’s future can be ruined if things remains as it is and they didn’t opt for that.

At home things are still the same they can go to bed without eating anything or sometimes they can live on only one meal per day. The house which they are living in is small, a house which has been build out of iron sheet. They are vulnerable to coldness and hotness simply because the nature and material of their house is not that perfect. Their house has a lot of holes that sometimes leaks in water whenever it rains. Her parents do not have any medical insurance that can cover them incase of medical emergency. They also have a house balance which they have not paid something that makes them to fear simply because their landlord will soon kick them out of their house. Decquine still face more challenges in accessing good clothes, he lives on old clothes which makes some of his friends to stigmatize him. Decquine feels that his life might be a waste if things remain the same and his parents also request for any support.
